Olomouc Astronomical Clock, Olomouc, Czech Republic, Europe
The Olomouc Astronomical Clock (Olomoucký orloj) is a unique socialist-realist timepiece integrated into the northern facade of the Town Hall in Upper Square (Horní náměstí). It is one of the few astronomical clocks in the world that depicts workers and scientists rather than saints and religious figures.
Visual Characteristics
The clock is housed in a 14-meter-high arched alcove with a golden mosaic background. Unlike the medieval aesthetic of the Prague clock, this version features Socialist Realist iconography. The mosaics depict various figures: a scientist, an athlete, and workers (a smith and a butcher). The lower section features a calendar dial decorated with scenes of traditional village life and labor for each month.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Horní náměstí, 779 00 Olomouc.
Access: Located on the north side of the Town Hall building in the pedestrian zone.
Viewing: The clock is outdoors and visible 24/7.
Performance: The figures and carillon activate daily at 12:00 (Noon).
Historical & Political Origin
The original clock on this site dated back to the 15th century and followed traditional religious themes. It was severely damaged by retreating German troops in May 1945. Between 1947 and 1955, it was completely redesigned by artist Karel Svolinský. Under the influence of the then-communist government, the religious and royal motifs were replaced with symbols of the "proletariat" and folk traditions of the Haná region.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Noon Show: At 12:00, the clock performs for approximately 6 minutes. Instead of the "Walk of the Apostles," a procession of moving mechanical puppets representing workers (a smith, a chemist, etc.) rotates to the sound of local folk melodies.
The Calendar Dial: The lower dial tracks the date and names of the day (Saint’s days), but also marks significant dates of the socialist calendar (e.g., birthdays of Stalin and Gottwald, though these specific inscriptions were largely obscured or removed after 1989).
Astronomical Functions: The central dial still tracks astronomical data, including the position of the sun, moon, and zodiac constellations.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The clock is situated in the main public square. 5G signal is stable. Public restrooms are located inside the Town Hall building (entrance near the tourist information center). The area is flat and fully wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
The only time to see the mechanical figures in motion is at 12:00 PM. It is recommended to arrive 10 minutes early to secure a viewing spot, as the area becomes crowded.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical fact is that the clock’s mosaic includes the specific dates of the "Liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army." A common misconception is that the clock is entirely "communist"; while the facade is socialist-realist, the internal clockwork still contains parts from older versions of the clock, including the 19th-century mechanism.
