The Azure Window Ruins are the remnants of a natural limestone arch located on the western coast of Gozo, Malta. The arch collapsed into the sea in March 2017, leaving behind submerged rock formations and a distinctive coastal landscape.

Visual Characteristics

The site now features the former base of the arch visible on the cliff face, composed of Globigerina Limestone. The surrounding sea is characterized by deep blue waters, revealing submerged rock formations and a reef system that was once part of the arch. The adjacent cliffs rise approximately 28 meters above sea level.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is situated near the village of San Lawrenz, accessible via Triq id-Dwejra. It is approximately 11 kilometers west of Victoria, Gozo's capital. A designated parking area is available adjacent to the former arch location. Public transport is provided by bus route 311, which connects Victoria to the Dwejra area.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Azure Window was a natural geological formation, created by the erosion of two sea caves composed of Globigerina Limestone. This sedimentary rock was gradually worn away by sea and wind over thousands of years, forming the arch. The structure collapsed on March 8, 2017, during a severe storm, due to continued natural erosion.

Diving and snorkeling are primary activities, exploring the submerged ruins and the surrounding reef. Small boat tours depart from the nearby Dwejra Inland Sea, passing through a cave to the open sea near the former arch site. Coastal walks along the cliffs offer views of the remaining geological features and the sea.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Public restrooms are available near the main parking area and the Dwejra Inland Sea. Natural shade is limited; however, some kiosks and a restaurant offer shaded seating. Cell phone signal coverage is generally reliable, with 4G/5G available. Several small food vendors and a restaurant operate near the parking and Inland Sea areas.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light enhances the remaining cliff formations and the sea. The months of April to June and September to October offer optimal weather conditions for coastal activities and diving, with calmer seas. The site is not significantly affected by tidal variations for surface viewing.

Facts & Legends

The Azure Window gained international recognition as a filming location for the first season of HBO's Game of Thrones, where it served as the backdrop for a significant wedding scene. Following its collapse, the underwater site has become a unique dive destination, offering a distinct exploration experience of the natural formation's remnants.
