Beaufort Castle consists of a medieval fortress ruin and an adjacent Renaissance château located in the commune of Beaufort, Luxembourg. While often grouped with northern attractions, it is situated in the Mullerthal region, approximately 42 kilometers south of Clervaux.

Visual Characteristics

The medieval section consists of extensive sandstone ruins including a keep, curtain walls, and a fortified water tower situated on a rocky outcrop. The adjacent Renaissance castle is a well-preserved three-story manor house featuring symmetrical facades, large mullioned windows, and slate roofing. The interior of the Renaissance wing retains period furnishings, tapestries, and original kitchen facilities.

The site is located at 24 Rue du Château, L-6313 Beaufort. It is roughly 35 minutes by car from Clervaux via the E421 and N10. Public transit from Clervaux requires taking a train to Ettelbruck followed by bus line 191 to the "Beaufort, Härewiss" stop, which is 700 meters from the entrance. Free on-site parking is available for visitors.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The medieval fortress was initiated in the 11th century as a small square fort and expanded in four stages until 1650. In 1643, Baron Jean de Beck, the Governor of Luxembourg, commissioned the Renaissance castle to the west of the ruins to serve as a more comfortable residence. The site was classified as a national monument in 1850 and has been state-owned since 1981.

Guided tours of the Renaissance castle are available at fixed times (typically 11:00, 14:00, and 16:00) and require advance booking. The castles are open seasonally from March 15 to November 15. The best time for photography is the morning for the medieval ruins and late afternoon for the Renaissance facade. Visiting in autumn provides a backdrop of changing foliage in the surrounding Mullerthal forest.

Facts & Legends

The castle is the site of a long-standing culinary tradition involving "Cassero" liqueur, made using a secret recipe involving blackcurrants and kirsch. A local historical oddity is that the last private resident, Anne-Marie Linckels-Volmer, lived in the Renaissance castle until her death in 2012, long after she had transferred the property to the state.
