Clervaux Castle, Clervaux, Luxembourg, Europe
Clervaux Castle (Château de Clervaux) is a medieval fortification located on a rocky spur surrounded by the town of Clervaux in northern Luxembourg. It is internationally recognized as the home of the UNESCO-listed "The Family of Man" photographic exhibition.
Visual Characteristics
The castle is a massive white-plastered stone complex featuring multiple wings, rounded defensive towers, and slate roofs. It is built in a horseshoe shape around a central courtyard. Its stark white exterior contrasts sharply with the dark forests of the Ardennes and the red-roofed buildings of the town below.
Location & Access Logistics
The castle is located at Montée du Château, L-9712 Clervaux.
Vehicle: Accessible via the N18 or E421. Large public parking lots are located near the train station or at the town center.
Public Transport: Reachable by train (CFL Line 10) from Luxembourg City. The castle is a 10-minute walk from the Clervaux station.
Pedestrian: Several steep paths connect the main shopping street to the castle gates.
Historical & Structural Origin
The foundations date to the 12th century, established by the Counts of Clervaux. The structure was expanded through the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance periods. On December 17, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, the castle was almost entirely destroyed by German artillery fire. It was meticulously reconstructed by the Luxembourgish state between 1946 and 1994 to serve as a cultural center.

Facts & Legends
During the Battle of the Bulge, a small contingent of American GIs used the castle as a final defensive stronghold against advancing German tanks. Legend speaks of a "White Lady of Clervaux" who supposedly haunts the lower cellars, though modern interest centers almost exclusively on the Steichen collection, which was donated to the people of Luxembourg by the US government.
