Bell Rock, Sedona, USA Arizona, North America

Bell Rock is a prominent geological formation located in the Coconino National Forest, near Sedona, Arizona. It is a large, bell-shaped sandstone butte.

Visual Characteristics

Bell Rock is composed of Permian-aged sedimentary sandstone, primarily red in color due to iron oxide content. Its shape is a distinct, rounded dome tapering towards the base, resembling an inverted bell. The surface exhibits layering and erosion patterns characteristic of sandstone formations. Its height above the surrounding terrain is approximately 170 meters (560 feet).

Location & Access Logistics

Bell Rock is situated approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of the Sedona city center along State Route 179 (Red Rock Scenic Byway). Access is via the Bell Rock Trailhead, located directly off SR 179. Parking is available at the trailhead, which has a fee. Public transport options are limited; the Sedona Shuttle operates a route that stops near the trailhead during peak seasons.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Bell Rock is a result of geological processes occurring over millions of years. It is composed of the Schnebly Hill Formation, deposited during the Permian period. This formation consists of sandstone, siltstone, and shale, uplifted and eroded by wind and water to create the current landforms. Ecologically, it is part of the high desert environment of central Arizona.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking trails circle the base of Bell Rock and ascend to its upper slopes. The Bell Rock Pathway is a popular multi-use trail. Rock climbing and rappelling are permitted on designated routes. Observation points offer views of the surrounding red rock formations.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The Bell Rock Trailhead provides parking facilities and restrooms. Shade is minimal on the trails and around the formation itself. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the vicinity. Food vendors are not present at the trailhead; visitors should bring their own supplies or utilize facilities in nearby Sedona.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun on the red rock. The best months for visiting are typically March through May and September through November, when temperatures are moderate. Summer months (June-August) can experience high temperatures. No tide considerations apply.

Facts & Legends

Bell Rock is considered by some to be a vortex site, believed to possess spiritual energy. While not scientifically verified, this belief contributes to its popularity among certain visitor groups. The formation's distinct shape has made it a recognizable landmark in the Sedona landscape.
