Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Bhaktapur, Nepal, Asia

Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the central plaza of the Malla-era kingdom of Bhaktapur. Located 13km east of Kathmandu, it is the most spacious of the three valley Durbar Squares and is widely considered the best-preserved example of medieval Newari urban planning.

Architectural Composition

The square is an open-air museum consisting of four distinct sections: Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square, and Pottery Square. Key structures include:

55-Window Palace: Built in 1427 CE by King Yaksha Malla, featuring a balcony with 55 intricately carved black-painted windows.

The Golden Gate (Lu Dhowka): Commissioned by King Ranjit Malla in 1753, it is the entrance to the Taleju Temple complex and a masterpiece of embossed gilded copper.

Nyatapola Temple: Located in Taumadhi Square, this five-story pagoda is the tallest in Nepal (30m), designed with earthquake-resilient engineering that allowed it to survive the 1934 and 2015 disasters.

Bhairavnath Temple: A massive three-story rectangular temple dedicated to the fierce manifestation of Shiva.

Historical Context

Founded in the 12th century by King Ananda Malla, Bhaktapur served as the capital of the unified Malla Kingdom until the 15th century. It remains a "living city" where traditional pottery, weaving, and woodcarving are practiced in public courtyards.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Juju Dhau: The square is famous for "King Curd," a thick, honey-sweetened yogurt sold in clay pots.

Pedestrianization: Unlike Patan or Kathmandu Durbar Squares, the core of Bhaktapur is largely car-free, significantly reducing noise and pollution.

Museums: Includes the National Art Gallery (inside the palace) containing rare palm-leaf manuscripts and thangkas.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon offers optimal lighting for the brickwork and reduced crowds. The square is the site of Bisket Jatra (Nepali New Year in April), a massive festival involving chariot pulling and ritual tug-of-war.
