The centre is situated adjacent to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, approximately 25 kilometers northwest of Sandakan city center. Access is via Jalan Sepilok. Ample parking is available on-site. Bus route No. 14 from Sandakan town stops near the entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 2008, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre was founded by Wong Siew Teo. Its purpose is to rescue sun bears orphaned or confiscated from illegal pet trade and provide them with rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild where possible. Sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) are native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.

Sun bears are characterized by a distinctive U-shaped or circular patch of color on their chest, which varies in shade from pale yellow to orange. This patch is unique to each individual, similar to a fingerprint. The centre's rehabilitation program involves gradually introducing bears to more complex environments to prepare them for potential release.
