Bousra Waterfall, Mondulkiri, Cambodia, Asia
Bousra Waterfall is a three-tiered cascade located in the Sen Monorom area of Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia.
It is one of the largest waterfalls in Cambodia, characterized by its multiple levels and surrounding forest.
Visual Characteristics
The waterfall descends in three distinct stages. The upper tier drops approximately 10 meters, followed by a wider, more powerful middle tier of about 15 meters. The final, largest tier plunges around 25 meters. The water is typically clear, with a light brown hue due to sediment. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical forest, with large trees and undergrowth.
Location & Access Logistics
Bousra Waterfall is situated approximately 40 kilometers east of Sen Monorom town. Access is via National Road 76, then turning onto a local dirt road. The final 5 kilometers to the waterfall site are unpaved and can be challenging, especially during the rainy season. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. Parking is available at the site entrance, managed by local vendors. Public transport directly to the waterfall is not available; visitors typically hire a taxi or motorbike from Sen Monorom.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The waterfall is a natural geological formation, carved by the erosion of the Sesan River over millennia. The surrounding area is part of the Mondulkiri Protected Forest, an important ecosystem for biodiversity.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the waterfall from designated viewing platforms. Swimming is permitted in the pools at the base of the lower tiers during the dry season when water flow is less intense. Hiking trails are present around the upper tiers, offering different vantage points. Local guides can be hired for exploration of the surrounding forest.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities are available at the waterfall site, including several small food and drink stalls operated by local vendors. Restrooms are present but are rudimentary. Shade is provided by the natural tree canopy and some temporary shelters. Cell phone signal is generally weak to non-existent within the immediate vicinity of the waterfall.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the water flow is moderate and the access road is in better condition. The wet season (May to October) sees significantly increased water volume, making the falls more powerful but also potentially hazardous and difficult to access. Mid-morning offers good lighting for photography before the sun is directly overhead.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the waterfall is inhabited by spirits. A specific legend tells of a young woman who drowned in the falls and whose spirit now protects the area. A practical tip for visitors is to carry insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be prevalent in the surrounding forest, especially at dawn and dusk.
