Ample parking is available within the park, including designated areas for RVs and boat trailers. Public transport is not available to the park entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The geological formations in the area are a result of millions of years of erosion and tectonic activity, characteristic of the Basin and Range Province. The Colorado River itself was historically a vital water source for indigenous peoples and later for agricultural development in the region. The park was established to preserve this desert ecosystem and provide recreational access to the river.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include camping in designated sites, boating and water skiing on the Colorado River, fishing (license required), and hiking on park trails. The park offers access to the river for swimming and picnicking. Birdwatching is also a common activity due to the diverse avian species present in the riparian zone.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park provides developed campgrounds with electrical and water hookups, as well as primitive sites. Restrooms with showers are available. Shade structures are present at picnic areas and some campsites. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the park. Food vendors are not located within the park, but are available in nearby Parker.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal time to visit for comfortable outdoor activities is during the cooler months, from October through April. Daytime temperatures can exceed 100°F (38°C) during summer. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer softer light. River activities are generally best during warmer months, though water temperatures can be cool.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the park is its proximity to the Parker Dam, a significant engineering feat completed in 1938, which is a key component of the Colorado River Aqueduct system. The area has a history of Native American habitation, with evidence of ancient settlements found in the surrounding desert.
