There is no direct vehicle access to the campo; parking is available at the Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma car parks, requiring further Vaporetto transfer.

The site of Campo San Bartolomeo was historically the location of the church of San Bartolomeo di Rialto, which was demolished in the early 19th century. The church was founded in the 9th century and served as a center for German merchants in Venice. The current square was established following the church's demolition. The land itself is reclaimed from the Venetian Lagoon.
