Cape Henry Lighthouse, Virginia Beach, USA Virginia, North America

The Cape Henry Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It marks the northernmost point of the Outer Banks.

Visual Characteristics

The current lighthouse, constructed in 1881, stands 157 feet tall. It is an octagonal structure built of brick, painted white, with a black lantern room. The original lighthouse, completed in 1792, was a 90-foot octagonal stone tower.

Location & Access Logistics

The lighthouse is situated within the Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story. Access is typically via Atlantic Avenue, turning onto General Booth Boulevard, then Fort Story Road. Visitors must pass through a military checkpoint; identification is required. Parking is available on-site. Public transport options are limited; a taxi or rideshare service is the most feasible alternative to private vehicle transport.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The original Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first federally funded public works project authorized by Congress, completed in 1792. It was built to guide ships into the Chesapeake Bay. The current lighthouse was constructed due to the original's structural deterioration and the need for a more powerful light. The site is a sandy coastal plain.

Key Highlights & Activities

Climbing the 191 steps to the observation deck provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. Interpretive displays detail the lighthouse's history and maritime significance. Photography of the structure and surrounding coastal environment is permitted.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the base of the lighthouse. Limited shade is provided by the structure itself. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are located directly at the lighthouse; visitors should plan to bring provisions or dine in nearby areas.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The best months for weather are typically April through October, avoiding the higher humidity and potential for severe weather in summer. Access may be restricted during military training exercises.

Facts & Legends

The original Cape Henry Lighthouse was decommissioned and partially dismantled in 1879 after the construction of the new tower, but its foundation remains visible. It is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the United States.
