Visual Characteristics

The railway operates on a 72.9% grade, making it one of the steepest passenger railways in the world. The cars are constructed of steel and glass, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The track itself is a double-track system with a central rack rail for traction. The station buildings are constructed of brick and stone, reflecting early 20th-century architecture.

Parking is available at the lower station for a fee. Public transport options include the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus lines 4 and 15, which stop near the lower station.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Incline Railway began in 1895 and it opened to the public in 1896. It was built by the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway Company. Its original purpose was to provide access to the growing tourist attractions on Lookout Mountain. The mountain itself is part of the Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley province, characterized by eroded sedimentary rock formations.

Key Highlights & Activities

Riding the funicular to the summit is the primary activity. At the upper station, visitors can access Point Park, a unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, which offers historical markers and observation points. Observation decks at the upper station provide views of the Tennessee River and the city.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at both the upper and lower stations. Shade is provided by the station structures and trees at the upper observation areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available at the upper station. Food vendors and gift shops are located at the upper station.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal photography lighting, early morning or late afternoon offers softer light. The best months for weather are typically April through October. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

A unique historical oddity is that the Incline Railway was originally built with three separate companies operating different sections of the mountain's inclines, with this section becoming the sole survivor. A local tip is to stand near the front of the car for unobstructed views during the ascent.
