Construction of the Incline Railway began in 1895 and it opened to the public in 1896. It was built by the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway Company. Its original purpose was to provide access to the growing tourist attractions on Lookout Mountain. The mountain itself is part of the Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley province, characterized by eroded sedimentary rock formations.
