The coral reef exhibits a high density of hard and soft corals, supporting a diverse fish population. Water clarity is typically high, allowing for visibility to depths of 10-15 meters. The island itself features a dry forest ecosystem with dense vegetation, including various acacia and baobab species. The coastline consists of sandy beaches and exposed coral rock formations.

The transfer point is typically the small harbor at Fumba, located approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Stone Town. Boat journeys take approximately 45 minutes. Private boat charters are the primary mode of transport, arranged through the Chumbe Island management. There is no public transport directly to the island.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Chumbe Coral Gardens was established as a marine protected area in 1994. The island's forest reserve was gazetted in 1964. The coral reef is a natural fringing reef system, formed over millennia by the growth of coral polyps in shallow, warm, clear waters. The island's forest is a remnant of the original coastal vegetation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling is permitted within designated reef zones. Guided walks are offered through the island's forest reserve, focusing on its flora and fauna. Educational presentations on marine conservation are available. Overnight stays in eco-lodges are possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Chumbe Island features eco-lodges with basic amenities, including composting toilets and rainwater harvesting. There are designated areas for snorkeling and walking. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable. Limited food and beverage services are available for overnight guests.
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons, from June to October and December to February, offer the most favorable weather conditions with reduced rainfall and calmer seas. Visibility for snorkeling is generally best during the morning hours. High tide is recommended for optimal snorkeling conditions, as it allows easier access to the reef.
Facts & Legends
Chumbe Island is home to the rare Aders' duiker, a small antelope found only on Zanzibar and Pemba. The island's lighthouse, built in 1904, is still operational and serves as a navigational aid.
