Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, Europe
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene (Kostel svaté Maří Magdaleny) is a high-Baroque Roman Catholic church located in the heart of the spa zone in Karlovy Vary. It is considered one of the most important Baroque monuments in the Czech Republic and is a designated National Cultural Monument.
Visual Characteristics
The church is a dynamic Baroque structure featuring a characteristic twin-tower facade topped with onion domes. Its floor plan is an elongated octagon (elliptical), a signature of its architect. The exterior is finished in white and cream plaster with decorative stucco. The interior is noted for its high-altar painting of St. Mary Magdalene and several Baroque sculptures from the workshop of Matthias Bernard Braun.

Historical & Ecological Origin
Designed by the renowned architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, the church was built between 1733 and 1736. It stands on the site of a former 14th-century Gothic church. The structure is built on a massive thermal spring sinter terrace; because the ground is thermally active, the foundations require constant monitoring.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Crypt: A unique underground funerary chapel containing a skeletal ossuary, an altar made of thermal sinter (aragonite), and a Gethsemane Garden representation.
Organ Concerts: The church is a primary venue for sacred music and organ recitals due to its superior Baroque acoustics.
Baroque Statuary: Notable figures of St. Mary Magdalene and other saints by the Elbe school of sculpture.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The church is open to the public daily outside of mass times. Guided tours of the underground crypt are available seasonally (May–October) and require a separate ticket. 5G cellular connectivity is stable. Public restrooms are not available inside the church but are located 50 meters away in the Hot Spring Colonnade.
Best Time to Visit
The church is best visited in the morning when the sun illuminates the main facade and the high altar. For those interested in the crypt, tours are typically conducted between 10:00 and 17:00. It is an active parish; visitors must remain silent during liturgy (typically Sunday mornings).
Facts & Legends
A verified historical fact is that the construction was funded by Emperor Charles VI. A notable technical detail is the "breathing" of the crypt: the underground chambers are ventilated to prevent the accumulation of natural CO2 gases rising from the thermal springs beneath the foundation.
