Hot Spring Colonnade, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, Europe
The Hot Spring Colonnade (Vřídelní kolonáda) is a modern functionalist structure in the center of the spa zone in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. It houses the city's most famous and powerful thermal spring, the Vřídlo.
Visual Characteristics
The current colonnade is a glass and concrete structure designed in the late 1960s and completed in 1975. The interior is defined by a large, airy hall featuring a 12-meter-high geyser of thermal water enclosed in a protective glass dome. The architecture is strictly functionalist, contrasting with the surrounding Neo-Renaissance and Baroque buildings.
Location & Access Logistics
The colonnade is located at Divadelní náměstí 2. It is situated in the pedestrian spa zone, directly across the Teplá River from the Mill Colonnade.
Access: Pedestrian only. The nearest bus stop is "Divadelní náměstí" (bus lines 2, 7).
Parking: Vehicle access is restricted. Public parking is available at the Gallery or Grandhotel Pupp garages (approx. 0.5km away).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site has been covered by various structures since the 16th century, including a Baroque hall and a cast-iron Neo-Renaissance colonnade. The Vřídlo spring is the only source of thermal water used for local spa baths. It originates from a depth of approximately 2,500 meters, reaching a temperature of 72.2°C (162°F) and discharging an average of 2,000 liters per minute.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Geyser: Observation of the natural thermal geyser, which can erupt to a height of 12 meters.
Underground Tour: Guided tours of the Vřídlo underground (Podzemí Vřídla) showcase the mineralization process, historical pipe systems, and "petrified" souvenirs (e.g., stone roses).
Spring Tasting: Several drinking fonts provide Vřídlo water cooled to 57°C and 41°C for medicinal consumption.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The hall is open daily and entry is free. It contains a tourist information center, public restrooms, and several stalls selling spa salts, porcelain cups, and traditional wafers. 5G and 4G signals are stable. The building is fully wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
The colonnade is open daily from 06:00 to 19:00. The underground tour operates seasonally (typically May–October) and requires tickets. Early morning is preferred for tasting the waters without crowds; evening light provides dramatic views through the large glass facades.
Facts & Legends
The spring was allegedly discovered in the 14th century during a stag hunt led by Emperor Charles IV. A verified technical fact is that the Vřídlo water contains high levels of dissolved CO2 and minerals, which accumulate as "sinter" or "aragonite" on any object submerged in the water for an extended period.
