Craighead Forest Park, Jonesboro, USA Arkansas, North America

Craighead Forest Park is a municipal park situated in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA.

It encompasses 69 acres of developed recreational space and 200 acres of undeveloped woodland.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a 60-acre lake with a dam structure. Surrounding the lake are mature hardwood trees, primarily oak and hickory, providing dense canopy cover in many areas. Open grassy fields are interspersed with wooded sections. The terrain is generally flat around the lake, with rolling hills in the undeveloped northern portion.

Location & Access Logistics

Craighead Forest Park is located approximately 3 miles southwest of Downtown Jonesboro. Access is via Nettleton Avenue, which becomes Stadium Drive as it enters the park. Several parking lots are available throughout the park, including near the lake, the nature center, and the disc golf course. Public transport options are limited; however, the Jonesboro Urban Transit System (JUTS) bus route 3 services Stadium Drive, with stops near the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The park was established in the 1930s, with significant development occurring through Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects. The lake was created by the construction of a dam across a small tributary of the St. Francis River. Ecologically, the area is part of the West Gulf Coastal Plain, characterized by deciduous forests and riparian zones.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include fishing and boating (non-motorized boats only) on the lake. A 1.5-mile paved loop trail encircles the lake, suitable for walking and cycling. The park also contains a 27-hole disc golf course, multiple playgrounds, and picnic areas with grills. A nature center offers educational exhibits. Hiking trails are present in the undeveloped northern section.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at multiple locations, including the nature center and near the lake. Numerous picnic tables and shelters provide shade. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout the developed areas of the park. No on-site food vendors are present, but convenience stores and restaurants are located within a 1-mile radius on Nettleton Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun. The best months for outdoor activities are April through October, with moderate temperatures. The lake is accessible year-round, though winter months may have lower visitor numbers.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lake was once rumored to be inhabited by a large catfish, though no verifiable evidence supports this claim. The park's nature center houses a preserved specimen of a rare native orchid.
