The Ridge Rider Trail System is a network of multi-use trails located in Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA.

This system provides designated routes for hiking, biking, and equestrian use within a natural setting.

Visual Characteristics

The trails traverse varied terrain, including wooded areas with mature deciduous trees and open fields. The ground surface consists primarily of packed earth, gravel, and occasional exposed rock formations. Elevation changes are moderate, with some steeper inclines and descents along ridge lines.

Location & Access Logistics

The primary access point is located off County Road 102, approximately 8 kilometers west of Downtown Jonesboro. Parking is available at the trailhead lot, which accommodates approximately 30 vehicles. No public transport services directly reach the trailhead.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Ridge Rider Trail System was developed by the Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Department, with initial trail construction commencing in 2005. The area's ecology is characterized by mixed hardwood forest, typical of the Crowley's Ridge geological formation, which is an unusual loessial ridge system in eastern Arkansas.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include hiking on the 15-kilometer loop trail, mountain biking on designated singletrack sections, and horseback riding on shared-use paths. The northern section of the main loop offers a 100-meter elevated boardwalk through a wetland area.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the main trailhead. Limited shade is provided by the tree canopy along most trails. Cell phone signal (4G) is intermittent, particularly in lower-lying areas. No food vendors are present at the trailhead; nearest services are located in Jonesboro.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the forest canopy. The months of April through May and September through October offer the most favorable weather conditions with moderate temperatures and lower humidity. Trail conditions are generally best after periods of dry weather.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the ridge system was once used as a strategic observation point by Native American tribes. A specific point along the westernmost trail, marked by a cluster of three large oak trees, is locally referred to as "The Sentinel."
