The castle is a four-towered, rectangular Gothic structure characterized by massive stone walls and a dry moat. Following extensive reconstruction in the 2010s, the castle features restored residential wings, knightly halls, and a double-level chapel. The exterior is defined by its clean, light-colored limestone masonry and pointed arched windows typical of the Angevin era.

The first stone castle was built after the Mongol invasion (1241–42), but its golden age occurred under King Louis the Great, who transformed it into a luxurious Gothic palace. It was known as the "Queens' Castle" as it served as a traditional wedding gift for Hungarian queens. The site is situated on a small rocky outcrop near the Szinva stream, surrounded by the forested slopes of the Bükk range.
