Construction of the arena, originally named the Providence Civic Center, began in 1971 and was completed in 1972. It was designed by the architectural firm Sasaki, Dawson, DeMay Associates. Its original purpose was to provide a modern facility for professional sports, concerts, and public gatherings in Providence.
