Dutch Island Light is a historic lighthouse situated on Dutch Island in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
This navigational aid marks the entrance to Narragansett Bay.
Visual Characteristics
The lighthouse structure is a cylindrical brick tower, painted white, with a black lantern room. It stands approximately 40 feet tall. The associated keeper's house is a two-story, rectangular building constructed of stone, also painted white.

Dutch Island Light is located on the western shore of Dutch Island. Access is primarily by boat. There is no public road access to the island. Visitors arriving by private vessel can anchor in the protected waters of the bay. The nearest public boat ramp is at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, approximately 3km East.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Dutch Island Light was completed in 1857. It replaced an earlier light established in 1827. The original purpose was to guide vessels into the West Passage of Narragansett Bay and to protect against the shoals surrounding the island. The island itself is a glacial till deposit with rocky outcrops.
