Edith Falls, Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, North America

Edith Falls is a waterfall located within the Chaguaramas National Park on the island of Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago.

The waterfall descends over a series of rock ledges, creating multiple tiers of water flow. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest, characterized by broadleaf trees and ferns. The water pool at the base is typically clear, with a rocky bottom.

Location & Access Logistics

Edith Falls is situated approximately 15 kilometers west of Port of Spain. Access is via the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, transitioning to the Uriah Butler Highway, and then onto the Chaguaramas Main Road. The final approach involves a 3-kilometer drive along the Edith Falls Road, a paved but narrow track. Parking is available at a designated lot near the trailhead. Public transport to the Chaguaramas area is limited; bus route P3 serves the main road, requiring a walk of approximately 2 kilometers to the trailhead.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The geological formation of Edith Falls is a result of erosion acting upon sedimentary rock over millennia. The area is part of the Northern Range, a mountain range formed by uplift and folding. The falls are a natural feature within a protected national park, established to preserve the island's biodiversity and natural landscapes.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking to the falls is the primary activity. The trail is approximately 1 kilometer in length and is moderately challenging, with some inclines. Swimming is possible in the pool at the base of the falls. Observation of local flora and fauna is also a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the trailhead parking area. Shade is provided by the dense forest canopy along the trail. Cell phone signal (4G) is intermittent and generally unreliable within the park. No food vendors are present at the falls; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The best months for visiting are during the dry season, from January to May, when water flow is consistent and trails are less muddy. The rainy season (June to December) can increase water volume but also poses risks of flash floods and slippery conditions.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the waters of Edith Falls possess restorative properties. A verified historical detail is that the Chaguaramas area was a significant U.S. naval base during World War II, with remnants of this period still visible in other parts of the park.
