Elephant Trunk Hill is situated approximately 2 kilometers south of Guilin's city center. Access is via local bus routes 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 14, 18, 23, 30, 33, 37, 45, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 88, 89, 97, and 99, which stop at the "Elephant Trunk Hill" bus station. Paid parking is available at the site entrance. Boat tours on the Li River also offer views of the formation.

A local legend states that the hill is a real elephant that came to Guilin to drink from the Li River and was turned into stone by a celestial being. The Water-Moon Cave is named for the optical illusion created by the reflection of the moon in the water passing through the archway, appearing as if the moon is floating in the cave.
