Public transport options include Wichita Transit bus line #11, which stops within a 0.5 km (0.3 mile) walk of the museum entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Exploration Place was conceived in the late 1990s as a project to revitalize the former municipal airport site and provide a dedicated science and nature center for the region. Construction began in 1999 and the facility opened to the public in 2000. The site itself is part of the Arkansas River floodplain, a historically significant waterway for the region.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can engage with interactive science exhibits covering topics such as physics, biology, and engineering. The museum houses a 3D digital theater offering educational films. An outdoor exhibit area features a splash park (seasonal) and a nature trail along the river. The Kansas Aviation Museum is also located within the same complex.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available throughout the facility. Shaded areas are provided in outdoor exhibit spaces and via the museum's roof overhangs. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the museum and surrounding grounds. On-site food service is available at the museum cafe, and several fast-food and casual dining restaurants are located within a 1.5 km (1 mile) radius.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting on exterior architectural elements and river views, late afternoon (approximately 2-4 PM) is recommended. The museum is generally less crowded on weekday mornings outside of school holidays. Weather is most favorable for outdoor activities from April to October.

Facts & Legends

A unique feature of Exploration Place is its collection of dinosaur fossils, including a full Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. The museum also houses a working replica of the original 1903 Wright Flyer aircraft.
