Historical & Ecological Origin
The Fenixloods warehouses were built in 1923 for the San Francisco line of the Holland-America Line. They were once the largest warehouses in the world. After sustaining damage during WWII and falling into disuse, the area was redeveloped starting in 2014. Fenix Food Factory was established as a temporary initiative to revitalize the neighborhood and has since become a permanent fixture of Rotterdam’s circular food economy.

The factory is open Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays). Weekends are high-density; weekday afternoons offer a quieter environment for working or canal-side viewing. The terrace is best visited at sunset for photography of the illuminated Wilhelminapier.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical detail is that the Fenixloods were named "Fenix" (Phoenix) after they were rebuilt following a massive fire in the late 1940s. A local legend in the neighborhood tells of Katendrecht’s past as a notorious "sailor's district" (De Kaap), once home to the city’s largest red-light district and Chinatown, now transformed into a gentrified culinary hotspot.
