Visual Characteristics

The building is a square structure characterized by a series of sloping floors and a spiral-like internal circulation route. Materials include glass, steel, corrugated plastic, and raw concrete. The exterior features a prominent orange steel girder and a large billboard-like facade. A public pedestrian ramp cuts through the center of the building, connecting the Museumpark with the Westzeedijk.

Constructed on a dike, the building utilizes the elevation change to integrate its sloping floors. The design was a major milestone for Rem Koolhaas, establishing his reputation for "Manhattanism" in European architecture. It was commissioned by the city of Rotterdam as part of a larger plan to centralize cultural institutions in the Museumpark area.

The building features a series of "fake" structural elements; for example, some columns in the restaurant area are made of tree trunks, while others are steel pillars painted to look like wood. In 2012, the Kunsthal was the site of one of the largest art thefts in Dutch history, where seven masterpieces (including works by Picasso and Monet) were stolen; they have never been recovered.
