Historical & Ecological Origin
The land was acquired by the City of Lansing in 1967 and officially opened as a nature center in 1971. It was established to preserve natural areas and provide environmental education. The site's ecological origin is primarily glacial till, with the wetlands formed by natural drainage patterns and the lake created through impoundment.

A 0.5-mile woodland trail is also available. The visitor center contains exhibits on local flora and fauna. Seasonal activities such as maple syrup demonstrations occur in late winter.

Grocery stores and restaurants are located within a 1-mile radius on East Michigan Avenue.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions, particularly in spring and fall. The best months for general visitation are April through October, offering the widest range of active wildlife and blooming vegetation. Spring (April-May) is ideal for observing migratory birds. Fall (September-October) provides autumn foliage colors.
Facts & Legends
A specific "secret" tip for visitors is to explore the less-trafficked western section of the park, accessible via a small unpaved path near the western edge of Maple Leaf Lake, which often yields sightings of deer and various waterfowl.
