Fort Phil Kearny was established by the U.S. Army in 1866 to protect emigrants on the Bozeman Trail. It was the focal point of Red Cloud's War, a conflict between the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the U.S. military. The fort was abandoned and burned in 1868.
