Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Vancouver City, USA Washington, North America

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a preserved 19th-century fur trading post located in Vancouver, Washington, USA.

It preserves the site of the former Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post and its associated village, as well as the U.S. Army's Vancouver Barracks.

Visual Characteristics

The reconstructed fort features timber palisades, a blacksmith shop, a bake house, and a Chief Factor's house. Structures are primarily constructed from wood, with some stone foundations. The site includes open fields and the adjacent Vancouver Barracks, which contains brick buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Location & Access Logistics

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is situated at 1001 East Evergreen Boulevard, Vancouver, Washington. It is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of downtown Vancouver. Parking is available on-site. Public transport options include C-TRAN bus routes 3 and 4, which stop near the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Established in 1825 by the Hudson's Bay Company as Fort Vancouver, it served as the company's primary Pacific Northwest headquarters and a major fur trading center. The U.S. Army established Vancouver Barracks adjacent to the fort in 1849. The site is located on the north bank of the Columbia River, within the Pacific Northwest's temperate rainforest biome.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore reconstructed fort buildings, including the Chief Factor's House and the blacksmith shop. Ranger-led interpretive programs are offered. The site also includes the Vancouver Barracks, which has historical buildings and exhibits. Walking trails are available throughout the park grounds.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the visitor center and near the reconstructed fort. Shaded areas are present within the fort structures and along some trails. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not typically present within the historic site itself, but are available in nearby downtown Vancouver.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is during the morning or late afternoon for softer light. Weather is generally mild year-round, but spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. High tide on the Columbia River does not directly impact access to the fort itself.

Facts & Legends

Fort Vancouver was once the largest non-native settlement west of the Rocky Mountains and the western terminus of the Hudson's Bay Company's extensive trade network. A notable historical oddity is the presence of a large, complex agricultural operation that supplied food to distant company posts.
