Vancouver Lake Regional Park, Vancouver City, USA Washington, North America

Vancouver Lake Regional Park is a 279-acre public park situated in Vancouver, Washington, USA.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a large, shallow lake with a maximum depth of approximately 10 feet. The lakebed consists of fine silt and mud. Surrounding the lake are extensive wetlands, marsh grasses, and riparian vegetation. The terrain is generally flat with some gently rolling hills on the western perimeter. The park includes mowed grass areas, paved pathways, and natural trails.

Location & Access Logistics

Vancouver Lake Regional Park is located at 11600 NW Lower River Road, Vancouver, WA 98660. It is approximately 7 miles northwest of downtown Vancouver. Access is via NW Lower River Road. The park has a large, paved parking lot with capacity for over 100 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; C-TRAN Bus Route 37 serves the area, with a stop approximately 0.5 miles from the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Vancouver Lake is a natural freshwater lake formed by glacial outwash and subsequent sedimentation. It is part of the Columbia River floodplain. The park was established in the late 20th century to preserve the lake and its surrounding habitat. The wetlands are a critical habitat for migratory birds and aquatic life.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include kayaking and canoeing on the lake (launching is possible from designated points). Birdwatching is a primary activity due to the diverse avian population. Hiking is available on paved and unpaved trails. Fishing is permitted in the lake. Picnicking is facilitated by designated areas with tables and grills.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The park provides restroom facilities at multiple locations. Shaded picnic shelters are available. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the park. There are no on-site food vendors; however, convenience stores and restaurants are located approximately 2 miles south on NW Lower River Road.

Best Time to Visit

For birdwatching, early morning and late afternoon offer the highest activity. The best months for pleasant weather and outdoor activities are May through September. The lake is accessible year-round, but water levels can fluctuate. High tide is not a significant factor for access to the park itself.

Facts & Legends

Vancouver Lake is known for its significant population of Western Painted Turtles, a species of concern in Washington State. The lake's shallow depth and silty bottom make it prone to algal blooms during warmer months, which can affect water clarity and recreational use.
