The fossil beds at Fossil Butte were formed approximately 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch. This period saw the existence of the ancient Lake Gosiute, a large freshwater lake that covered much of southwestern Wyoming. The rapid deposition of fine sediments in this lake created ideal conditions for the preservation of aquatic life, including fish, insects, and plants, as well as terrestrial animals that were washed into the lake.
