Historical & Ecological Origin

The geological formations along the trail represent the White River Group, deposited over millions of years from the Oligocene epoch. These deposits contain a rich assemblage of fossilized mammals, including rhinoceros, horses, and saber-toothed cats, providing a record of ancient grassland ecosystems.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal viewing of geological features and to avoid extreme temperatures, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The months of May through September offer the most favorable weather conditions. Midday sun can be intense.

Facts & Legends

The fossil beds here are so well-preserved that paleontologists have unearthed significant specimens that have contributed to understanding mammalian evolution in North America. A specific point of interest is the presence of fossilized oreodonts, ancient mammals resembling pigs.
