The Garni Temple is an ancient classical temple located in the Kotayk Province of Armenia, near the village of Garni.
It is the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union.
Visual Characteristics
The temple is constructed from basalt stone. It features a rectangular base measuring 15 meters by 25 meters. The structure is supported by 24 Ionic columns, with 6 along the front and back facades and 8 along the side facades. The entablature includes a frieze with various decorative motifs. The temple stands at a height of approximately 30 meters, including its plinth.
Location & Access Logistics
The Garni Temple is situated 28 kilometers east of Yerevan. Access is via the M1 highway towards Garni village. From Garni village, follow the signs for the temple, a distance of approximately 3 kilometers. Parking is available at a designated lot near the temple entrance. Public transport options include bus routes from Yerevan to Garni village, followed by a walk or taxi to the temple site.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The temple was constructed in the 1st century AD by King Tiridates I of Armenia. It served as a temple to the sun god Mihr. The structure was rebuilt in the 1970s after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1679. The site is located on a basalt plateau overlooking the Azat River gorge.
