Public transportation options are limited; the nearest Amtrak station is in Old Saybrook, requiring a taxi or ride-share service for the final leg.

Construction of Gillette Castle began in 1914 and was completed in 1919. It was designed and built by William Gillette, a renowned stage actor famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The castle served as his private residence and was intended to be a theatrical stage for his life.
