Gottwaldova Park, Zlin, Czech Republic, Europe
Gottwaldova Park, currently known officially as Komenský Park (Sady Komenského), is a central urban green space located in Zlín, Czech Republic. It is situated on a slope between the historic Zlín Castle and the main transport artery, Třída Tomáše Bati.
Visual Characteristics
The park covers an area of approximately 2.5 hectares and is characterized by a mix of mature deciduous trees, including lindens and maples, and open grassy areas. The terrain is tiered with granite staircases and paved asphalt pathways. The central feature is a modern glass-and-steel library building and the historic four-wing Zlín Castle, which features a white-and-yellow facade.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is located at Sady Svobody, 760 01 Zlín. It is accessible by all trolleybus lines passing through the city center (lines 1, 2, 6, 8, 9), with the "Náměstí Míru" or "Školní" stops situated within 100 meters. For vehicle access, public parking is available at the nearby Zlaté Jablko Shopping Center or the parking lot on Hradní Street.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Originally the castle gardens, the space was opened to the public in the 19th century and underwent significant transformation during the functionalist expansion of the city in the 1930s. During the socialist era, it was renamed Gottwaldova Park after Klement Gottwald; it was reverted to honor Jan Amos Komenský after 1989. The park's ecology is maintained as a temperate urban woodland.
Key Highlights & Activities
The park serves as a hub for the Zlín Film Festival, featuring outdoor cinema screenings and workshops. A large modern playground is located in the northern section. Visitors can access the Zlín Castle (Zlínský zámek) or visit the František Bartoš Regional Library, which occupies a prominent position within the park grounds.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are located inside the Regional Library and the castle building. The park is heavily shaded by old-growth trees and features numerous steel-and-wood benches. 5G mobile signal is consistent throughout the area. Water fountains are available near the central playground and the library entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The park is best visited in late spring and summer (May–August) for peak foliage. Photography of Zlín Castle is optimal during the morning hours when the eastern facade is illuminated. During the winter, the park is a primary site for the city's Christmas market and light installations.
Facts & Legends
The park contains the "Tree of Liberty," planted in 1918 to celebrate the founding of Czechoslovakia. Local lore suggests that secret underground corridors lead from the castle cellars toward the Dřevnice River, though these remain unverified. A unique historical oddity is the presence of several modernist sculptures scattered among the traditional botanical arrangements.
