Zlín Zoo, Zlin, Czech Republic, Europe
Zlín Zoo (Zoo and Chateau Zlín-Lešná) is a unique combination of a zoological garden, an arboretum, and a 19th-century romantic chateau located in Zlín, Moravia. It is organized into five geographic zones representing Africa, Asia, Australia, America, and Ethiopia.
Visual Characteristics
The site is defined by its English-style landscape park and the fairytale Neo-Renaissance Chateau Lešná. Architectural features include intricate wood paneling and silk wallpapers in the chateau, while the zoo utilizes naturalistic enclosures with waterfalls and stone elements. The botanical collection comprises over 1,100 species of plants, notably the Japanese garden Mu-Shin with century-old white pines and Kasuga stone lanterns.
Location & Access Logistics
The zoo is situated at Lukovská 112, approximately 7 km north of Zlín city center. It is accessible via road 491, with three large free parking lots managed by the zoo (Gate 1 and seasonal Gate 2). Public transit from Zlín center includes trolleybus lines 4, 5, and 36, or regional bus lines to Lukov/Kašava. A 5-km dedicated cycleway (No. 5067) also connects the city to the main entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The estate was established in 1804 by the Seilern family. Count Josef Jan of Seilern began breeding animals on the site in the early 1800s, but the current chateau was built between 1887 and 1893 after the original manor was demolished. The modern zoo was founded by Josef Seilern, a keen zoologist and traveler, who opened his collections to the public before the estate was state-confiscated in 1945.
Key Highlights & Activities
Bay of Rays: A unique pavilion where visitors can touch and hand-feed stingrays.
Yucatan Tropical Hall: A walk-through indoor rainforest featuring Mayan artifacts.
Chateau Lešná: Guided tours of 11 period-furnished rooms, including a collection of silver tableware and an Egyptian mummy.
Mu-Shin Japanese Garden: One of the largest Japanese gardens in the Czech Republic.
Jaguar Trek: The largest jaguar breeding facility in Europe with a viewing pond.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes multiple seasonal restaurants such as Tyrol and Neapolitáno, offering traditional Czech and international dishes. Baby-changing tables and stroller rentals are available at the main gate. 5G signal is stable across most of the 52-hectare grounds. Shaded paths are frequent, making the park navigable during high temperatures.
Best Time to Visit
Mid-June to late August offers the warmest weather for viewing outdoor African and South American exhibits. However, winter visits are popular due to the climate-controlled Yucatan Hall and Ray Bay; many animals, including tigers and red pandas, are more active in the snow. Arrive at 8:30 AM on weekdays to avoid peak afternoon crowds.
Facts & Legends
The chateau's interiors were exceptionally modern for their time, featuring running water, flushing toilets, and even a telephone system in the late 19th century. A local story notes that the name "Zlín" supposedly originated after foreign raids left the town in a "bad" (zlý) state of looting and fire, contrasting with its earlier nickname "The Golden Apple."
