Grosse Scheidegg, Grindelwald, Switzerland, Europe
Grosse Scheidegg is a mountain pass situated at 1,962 meters between the valley of Grindelwald and the Haslital (Meiringen). It serves as a geographical boundary between the Lütschine and Aare river basins.
Visual Characteristics
The pass is defined by its proximity to the vertical limestone wall of the Wetterhorn, which rises abruptly over 1,700 meters above the saddle. The terrain consists of high-alpine pastures and scattered groups of spruce and larch trees. To the southwest, the view encompasses the Eiger and the Grindelwald valley; to the northeast, it overlooks the Reichenbach Valley and the Engelhörner range.
Location & Access Logistics
Grosse Scheidegg is located approximately 12km from Grindelwald.
Public Transit: Accessible via the "Grindelwald Bus" (Yellow PostBus) from Grindelwald station. The journey takes 35-40 minutes.
Private Vehicles: Restricted access. The road from Grindelwald is closed to private cars, and the road from Meiringen is restricted to residents and public transport.
Cycling: A popular route for road cyclists and mountain bikers via a paved, steep mountain road with average gradients of 7-8%.
Hiking: A 3-hour ascent from Grindelwald or a 2-hour descent from First.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The pass was historically a vital mule track for the transit of cheese and cattle between the Bernese Oberland and central Switzerland. Geologically, it marks the contact point between the crystalline Aare Massif and the sedimentary Helvetic nappes. The area is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a habitat for golden eagles and chamois.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking: The starting or ending point of the "First-Grosse Scheidegg" panoramic trail and the multi-day "Via Alpina."
Photography: Direct, unobstructed views of the Wetterhorn's north face and the Upper Grindelwald Glacier.
Cycling: One of the most famous alpine passes for cyclists due to the lack of private motorized traffic.
Winter: The road from Grindelwald serves as a 5.5km sledging run (Schwarzwaldalp-Grosse Scheidegg) during snow-reliable months.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The Berghotel Grosse Scheidegg provides a restaurant with a panoramic terrace, dormitory-style and private accommodation, and public restrooms. There is 5G cellular coverage at the pass. The bus stop is located directly adjacent to the hotel. Due to the high altitude and exposure, there is no natural shade on the pass itself.
Best Time to Visit
Optimal photography occurs in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the north face of the Wetterhorn. The PostBus service typically operates from late May to late October. For hikers, July through September offers the most stable weather. In winter, the site is a quiet destination for snowshoeing and sledging.
Facts & Legends
A verified geological feature: the "Wetterhorn-Aufschiebung" is clearly visible here, where older rock layers have been pushed over younger ones during the formation of the Alps. Local lore refers to the pass as the "Great" Scheidegg to distinguish it from the Kleine Scheidegg (Little Scheidegg) located between Grindelwald and Wengen.
