Hradec Castle, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic, Europe
Hradec Castle (Hrádek) is the oldest part of the Český Krumlov State Castle complex. It consists of the original Gothic residential palace and the iconic Castle Tower, situated on the second castle courtyard.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is dominated by the Castle Tower, a six-story cylindrical tower featuring a Renaissance gallery and a bell tower. The exterior is notable for its vibrant, 16th-century sgraffito and fresco decorations depicting architectural elements and allegorical figures. The interior of the palace (Hrádek) maintains its medieval character with thick stone walls and narrow corridors.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Zámek 59 (Second Courtyard), 381 01 Český Krumlov.
Access: Pedestrians enter via the Red Gate (Červená brána) from Latrán street. The entrance to the tower and the Castle Museum is located in the second courtyard.
Parking: Use peripheral lots P1 (Jelení zahrada) or P2 (Pod poštou). The historic core is a no-drive zone.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Built in the mid-13th century, Hradec served as the original fortified seat of the Lords of Krumlov (a branch of the Witigonen family). The tower’s lower levels are Gothic, while the upper sections and the gallery were reconstructed in Renaissance style by architect Baldassare Maggi in the 1580s. The structure is anchored into a granite ridge overlooking the Vltava River.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Castle Tower: Visitors can climb 162 steps to the gallery for the highest panoramic view of the town and the Vltava meanders.
Castle Museum: Located within the Hradec palace, this museum features "depositories" showcasing 19th-century noble life, historical weaponry, and the original castle mint.
The Bells: The tower houses four historical bells, the largest of which (the "Vincenc") dates back to 1406.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The ground floor of the Hradec palace houses the main castle ticket office and an information center. Public restrooms are located nearby in the first courtyard. 5G signal is stable on the tower gallery. The Castle Museum is climate-controlled, providing protection from external weather conditions.
Best Time to Visit
The tower and museum are open year-round (unlike the castle interiors which close in winter). The tower is best visited at 09:00 to avoid the mid-day queue. For photography, the tower gallery provides optimal light for the town's red roofs during the late afternoon.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical fact is that the tower served as a high-security vantage point and a symbol of the Rosenberg family's power. Legend states that the tower was protected by a dragon-like creature dwelling in the river below, though the "dragon" is represented today by the stuffed crocodile in the nearby Old Town Hall.
