Rotating Auditorium, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic, Europe
The Rotating Auditorium (Otáčivé hlediště) is an open-air theater located in the central park of the Český Krumlov State Castle and Chateau. It is a unique scenic facility where the audience area rotates 360 degrees to face different stages and natural scenery within the castle gardens.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is a modern metal and concrete amphitheater with a capacity of 644 spectators. It consists of a tiered seating block mounted on a central pivot mechanism. The "stage" is the surrounding 10-hectare park, including the Bellaria Summer Manor, mature forest groves, and the castle pond. Performances utilize no artificial sets, relying instead on the historical architecture and natural terrain.
Location & Access Logistics
The auditorium is situated at the western end of the Castle Garden (Zámecká zahrada).
Access: Pedestrians must walk through the castle courtyards and up the incline into the garden, a 15-minute walk from the town center.
Parking: The nearest public parking is Lot P1 (Jelení zahrada).
Entry: During performance nights, access to the garden is restricted to ticket holders approximately one hour before the show.
Historical & Technological Origin
The original concept was developed by scenographer Joan Brehms in 1958. The first version was manually rotated by 40 people. The current version, installed in 1994, is powered by electric motors and a high-precision hydraulic system. It is operated by the South Bohemian Theatre (Jihočeské divadlo) based in České Budějovice.
Key Highlights & Activities
Performances range from opera and ballet to fairy tales and drama. The rotating mechanism allows for seamless cinematic transitions between scenes located in different parts of the garden. The Bellaria Summer Manor often serves as a primary backdrop for operatic productions. Audio is delivered via wireless headphones to ensure high fidelity and to comply with local noise ordinances.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Seating: Open-air and unprotected from weather; performances continue during light rain.
Facilities: Mobile restrooms and refreshment kiosks are located near the entrance to the seating area.
Connectivity: 5G signal is available but usage is prohibited during performances.
Dress Code: Practical outdoor clothing is recommended as evening temperatures in the garden drop significantly.
Best Time to Visit
The performance season is strictly limited to the summer months (June–August). Shows typically begin at 21:00 or 21:30 to utilize natural darkness for lighting effects. Tickets are highly sought after and frequently sell out 6–12 months in advance.
Facts & Legends
The auditorium has been the subject of ongoing controversy regarding its impact on the historical integrity of the UNESCO-protected castle garden. Conservationists have repeatedly called for its removal or relocation, while its popularity and unique technical status have kept it in operation for over 60 years.
