Historical & Ecological Origin

Exhibits focus on the geology, paleontology, and Native American history of the Great Basin region. Specific displays include fossilized remains of prehistoric animals, artifacts from the Shoshone and Paiute tribes, and information on the area's mining and ranching heritage. Educational programs and temporary exhibitions are also presented.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Limited seating is provided within exhibition areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable within the museum. No food vendors are located directly within the museum; however, several restaurants and cafes are within a 0.2km radius in the downtown area.

Best Time to Visit

The museum is open year-round. For optimal lighting on exhibits, midday visits are recommended. Weather in Elko is most temperate during the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October).
