Kilimanjaro Summit, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Africa
Kilimanjaro Summit is the highest point in Tanzania, located within the Kilimanjaro Region. It is the apex of Mount Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano.
Visual Characteristics
The summit area, known as Uhuru Peak, is characterized by permanent ice fields and glaciers. These ice formations are remnants of past glacial periods and are actively receding. The terrain consists of volcanic rock and scree. The peak itself is a small, snow-covered plateau.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Kilimanjaro Summit is exclusively via multi-day trekking routes. The most common starting points are Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, and Rongai gates, all located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. These gates are accessible by road from Moshi town, approximately 60-80 km away depending on the gate. Private vehicle transport or organized tour operator shuttles are the primary means of reaching the gates. Public transport to the gates is not available. Parking is available at the respective park gates for vehicles accompanying trekking groups.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Mount Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano formed by volcanic activity over one million years ago. It comprises three distinct cones: Shira, Kibo, and Mawenzi. Uhuru Peak is located on Kibo, the youngest and highest cone. The summit's ice fields are a result of its high altitude and proximity to the equator, creating unique microclimates.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is summiting Uhuru Peak via established trekking routes. This involves strenuous hiking over several days. Observation of the sunrise from Stella Point or Gilman's Point, located on the crater rim, is a significant highlight. Photography of the glacial formations and panoramic views from the summit is also a key activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent structures or amenities at Kilimanjaro Summit. Basic facilities such as pit latrines and designated camping areas are available at campsites along the trekking routes. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally unavailable at higher altitudes. Food and water must be carried by trekkers or provided by tour operators.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for summit attempts are January to March and June to October, which represent the dry seasons. These periods offer clearer skies and less precipitation. The best time of day for summiting is typically overnight, aiming to reach the summit for sunrise. This timing also helps avoid the midday sun and allows for descent during daylight hours.
Facts & Legends
The receding glaciers of Kilimanjaro are a significant indicator of climate change. While local legends speak of spirits residing on the mountain, scientific observation confirms the geological and meteorological processes shaping its summit.
