The statue is located 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) east of Loja's city center. Access is via the paved road "Via a la Virgen," which branches off from Avenida Orillas del Zamora. Parking is available at the base of the hill, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. Public bus line 12, heading towards "El Pedregal," stops at the entrance to the access road.

Construction of La Virgen de Loja began in 1971 and was completed in 1973. The project was initiated by the local government and funded by public donations. The statue was erected on a natural elevation of sedimentary rock.
