La Virgen de Loja is a large statue of the Virgin Mary situated on a prominent hill overlooking the city of Loja, Ecuador.

The statue serves as a religious and civic symbol for the region.

Visual Characteristics

The statue is constructed from reinforced concrete and stands approximately 30 meters (98 feet) tall. It is painted white and depicts the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped in prayer. The base of the statue is a multi-tiered concrete structure.

Location & Access Logistics

The statue is located 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) east of Loja's city center. Access is via the paved road "Via a la Virgen," which branches off from Avenida Orillas del Zamora. Parking is available at the base of the hill, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. Public bus line 12, heading towards "El Pedregal," stops at the entrance to the access road.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of La Virgen de Loja began in 1971 and was completed in 1973. The project was initiated by the local government and funded by public donations. The statue was erected on a natural elevation of sedimentary rock.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can ascend to the base of the statue via a paved walkway. Observation decks offer panoramic views of Loja and the surrounding valley. Photography is a common activity. Religious services are occasionally held at the site.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located at the parking area. Limited shade is available near the base of the statue. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable. No food vendors are permanently stationed at the site, but small stalls may operate on weekends or during festivals.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, the late afternoon (between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM) provides direct sunlight on the statue. The dry season, from June to September, offers clearer skies and more comfortable temperatures. No tide considerations apply.

Facts & Legends

A local belief states that the statue's eyes follow visitors as they move around the base, though this is attributed to optical illusion caused by the curvature of the concrete and the viewing angles.
