Naval Memorial (Marine-Ehrenmal Laboe) is a prominent landmark and memorial site located on the Baltic Sea coast, commemorating sailors of all nations who remained at sea.
Visual Characteristics
The memorial is defined by a 72-meter-high brick-clad tower that tapers slightly toward the top, resembling a ship's stem, a submarine conning tower, or a sail. The site includes a large underground hall of remembrance (Hall of Silence) and a historic display of naval artifacts. The tower offers an observation deck with panoramic views.

Built between 1927 and 1936 on the site of a former coastal fortification. Originally intended to honor WWI German naval casualties, it was rededicated in 1954 as a memorial to sailors of all nations who died in both World Wars and to peace on the high seas. It is currently managed by the German Naval Association (Deutscher Marinebund).

Infrastructure & Amenities
The grounds and the Hall of Remembrance are accessible. The observation deck is accessible via elevator. A souvenir shop and restrooms are located on-site. Numerous restaurants and fish stalls are situated along the adjacent Laboe beach promenade. 5G signal is stable.
Best Time to Visit
Clear Days: For the 30-kilometer visibility from the tower.
Kiel Week (June): To observe the parade of international naval vessels entering and leaving the fjord.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the acoustic design of the Hall of Silence, which utilizes its architecture to dampen all external noise, including the heavy wind from the Baltic. Legend states that the tower's shape was designed to be intentionally ambiguous so it would not be interpreted solely as a military symbol, allowing its preservation following the demilitarization of Germany post-WWII.
