Lakshmana Temple, Khajuraho, India, Asia
The Lakshmana Temple is a Hindu temple located in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is dedicated to Vishnu and is one of the earliest and most elaborate temples in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments.
Visual Characteristics
Constructed primarily from sandstone, the temple exhibits a pale ochre color. It is a Panchayatana style temple, meaning it has a central shrine surrounded by four subsidiary shrines. The temple stands on a high plinth and features intricate carvings across its exterior walls, depicting deities, celestial beings, and scenes from daily life. The main shrine has a shikhara (spire) that is curvilinear and rises in tiers. The temple's dimensions are approximately 20 meters east-west and 15 meters north-south.
Location & Access Logistics
The Lakshmana Temple is situated in the eastern group of Khajuraho temples. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Khajuraho bus stand and 10 kilometers from the Khajuraho railway station. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available from both the bus stand and the railway station. There is a designated parking area adjacent to the temple complex. No specific bus lines directly serve the temple; visitors typically use local transport from the main town.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the Lakshmana Temple began in the late 10th century CE and was completed around 954 CE. It was commissioned by the Chandela king Yashovarman and dedicated to Vishnu. The temple's original purpose was religious worship and as a demonstration of royal power and piety. The sandstone used in its construction was quarried from local deposits.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the detailed sculptural panels is the primary activity. Visitors can walk around the temple's exterior to examine the carvings. Photography of the exterior is permitted. Entry into the inner sanctum is restricted. Guided tours are available from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) office located near the Western Group of Temples.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the main Khajuraho temple complex, approximately 500 meters from the Lakshmana Temple. Shade is provided by the temple structure itself and by trees within the surrounding grounds. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are located near the main entrance to the Khajuraho temple complex, about a 10-minute walk away.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting for photography, the early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) offer softer light. The best months for visiting are from October to March, when temperatures are moderate. There are no tide-related considerations for this inland temple.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of the Lakshmana Temple is that it is one of the few temples in Khajuraho that faces east, aligning with the rising sun. While often referred to as Lakshmana Temple, it is primarily dedicated to Vishnu, with the name possibly derived from the Chandela ruler Lakshavarman, who may have initiated its construction or contributed to its completion.
