Lighthouse Reef Atoll, San Pedro, Belize, North America
Lighthouse Reef Atoll is a coral atoll located approximately 80 kilometers east of the Belize mainland, off the coast of San Pedro.
It is the easternmost atoll of the Belize Barrier Reef and is known for its distinct horseshoe shape.
Visual Characteristics
The atoll consists of a ring of coral islands and reefs surrounding a central lagoon. The islands are low-lying, typically composed of sand and coral rubble, with sparse vegetation dominated by coconut palms and low shrubs. The lagoon waters are shallow and clear, varying in color from pale turquoise to deeper blue depending on depth. The outer reef edge drops off sharply into the Caribbean Sea.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Lighthouse Reef Atoll is primarily via boat from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, or Belize City. The journey typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours by high-speed water taxi or charter boat. There are no roads or direct land access from the mainland. Limited docking facilities exist on some of the larger cayes, such as Half Moon Caye.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Lighthouse Reef Atoll is a natural geological formation, a classic example of a coral atoll that developed over thousands of years as a coral reef grew on a submerged volcanic seamount. Its ecological significance lies in its status as a critical habitat for numerous marine species, including migratory birds and endangered sea turtles.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include snorkeling and scuba diving, particularly at the Great Blue Hole, a large underwater sinkhole. Diving is also popular along the reef walls and within the lagoon. Birdwatching is a primary activity on Half Moon Caye, which is a protected nature reserve. Kayaking and paddleboarding are possible within the calmer lagoon waters.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Limited infrastructure exists on the atoll. Basic accommodations, such as eco-lodges and dive resorts, are present on some cayes. Restrooms are available at these establishments. Cell phone signal is generally weak or non-existent outside of resort areas. Food vendors are typically found only at established resorts or on tour boats.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from December to May, offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower rainfall and calmer seas. The best time of day for underwater photography is generally between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight penetration is optimal. High tide is not a critical factor for most activities, but low tide can expose some reef areas.
Facts & Legends
The Great Blue Hole, a prominent feature of Lighthouse Reef, is a massive underwater sinkhole that formed during past ice ages when sea levels were lower. Its near-perfect circular shape and depth of over 120 meters have made it a world-renowned diving destination. Local folklore sometimes speaks of ancient underwater cities, though these are unsubstantiated.
