Linden County Park, Flint, USA Michigan, North America

Linden County Park is a public recreational area situated in Flint, Michigan, USA.

This park encompasses 150 acres of mixed woodland and open fields, featuring a central lake and several smaller ponds.

Visual Characteristics

The park's terrain consists of rolling hills covered in deciduous trees, primarily oak and maple. The lake, known as Silver Lake, has a depth averaging 15 feet and exhibits a murky green coloration due to sediment. Shorelines are a mix of mowed grass and natural vegetation. Several picnic areas are equipped with concrete tables and metal grills.

Location & Access Logistics

Linden County Park is located 8 miles southwest of downtown Flint. Access is via Linden Road (M-153). The main entrance is clearly marked from Linden Road. Ample parking is available in designated lots near the lake and the main pavilion. Public transport options are limited; however, Flint's Route 12 bus has a stop approximately 1 mile east of the park entrance on Miller Road.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was acquired by Linden County in 1958 through a combination of purchase and donation. Its development as a park began in the early 1960s, focusing on preserving the natural landscape while providing recreational facilities. Ecologically, the area is part of the Michigan Glacial Moraine, characterized by its varied topography formed by glacial activity.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include fishing in Silver Lake (Michigan fishing license required), picnicking at designated sites, and walking the 2-mile paved loop trail around the lake. Birdwatching is common due to the diverse avian population. Kayak and canoe rentals are available seasonally from the park office.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located near the main parking lot and the pavilion. Several areas offer natural shade from mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available throughout the park, though it may be weaker in denser wooded areas. No on-site food vendors operate within the park; however, convenience stores are located within a 2-mile radius on Linden Road.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (7-9 AM) offers soft, directional light. The best months for general visitation are May through October, with peak foliage color occurring in mid-October. Silver Lake is accessible for boating year-round, weather permitting.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the deepest part of Silver Lake, near the northern inlet, is rumored to be the resting place of a small, privately owned aircraft that disappeared in the 1970s. No official confirmation or recovery efforts have ever been documented.
