Lynx Creek Dam was constructed in 1915 by the U.S. Forest Service to provide water for downstream agricultural use. The lake is situated within the Prescott National Forest, an ecosystem dominated by Ponderosa pine, manzanita, and various chaparral species. The geology is characterized by Precambrian granite.

Boating (non-motorized and electric motors only) is permitted. Fishing for rainbow trout and largemouth bass is a primary activity. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun. The best months for pleasant weather are April through October. Fishing is often productive in the spring and fall. High tide is not a relevant factor for this freshwater lake.

A local legend suggests that prospectors in the late 19th century found significant gold deposits in Lynx Creek, leading to a brief mining boom in the area. While gold panning is no longer permitted, remnants of old mining claims can sometimes be observed along the creek banks.
