Makoshika State Park, Glendive, USA Montana, North America

Makoshika State Park is Montana's largest state park, situated near Glendive in the southeastern region of the state.

Visual Characteristics

The park features badlands topography characterized by eroded buttes, canyons, and hoodoos. Rock formations display distinct layers of sandstone, shale, and coal, exhibiting colors ranging from tan and brown to deep red and gray. Vegetation is sparse, consisting primarily of prairie grasses, sagebrush, and scattered ponderosa pines and junipers in sheltered areas.

Location & Access Logistics

Makoshika State Park is located 3 miles west of Glendive, Montana, accessible via Interstate 90. Take Exit 213 and follow Montana Highway 16 South for approximately 3 miles. The park entrance is clearly marked. Ample parking is available at the visitor center and various trailheads. No public transport directly serves the park.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The badlands of Makoshika were formed over millions of years through the erosion of sedimentary rock layers by wind and water. These layers contain fossils dating back to the Late Cretaceous period, including dinosaur remains. The park was established in 1953 to preserve this unique geological and paleontological landscape.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include hiking on designated trails such as the Haxby Trail (2.5 miles loop) and the Cap Rock Trail (1.5 miles loop). Fossil hunting is permitted in designated areas with a valid permit. Wildlife viewing opportunities include bison, pronghorn, deer, and various bird species. Scenic drives are available throughout the park.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the visitor center and at designated picnic areas. Sheltered picnic tables are provided. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park, with better reception near the park entrance and visitor center. No food vendors are located within the park; visitors should bring their own supplies.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for hiking and outdoor activities is from late spring (May) through early fall (October). Summer months (June-August) can experience high temperatures, making early morning or late afternoon visits preferable. Spring offers wildflowers, while fall provides cooler temperatures and changing vegetation colors.

Facts & Legends

Makoshika is derived from the Assiniboine words "mako" (earth) and "shika" (bad), translating to "bad earth." This name reflects the challenging terrain and the historical perception of the area. A notable find within the park was a nearly complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton.
