Mali Grad, Kamnik, Slovenia, Europe
Mali Grad (Little Castle) is a medieval castle complex situated on a steep limestone outcrop in the center of Kamnik, Slovenia. It features a rare two-story Romanesque chapel, one of the few preserved examples of its kind in Europe.
Visual Characteristics
The site is dominated by the Chapel of St. Eligius, which features a shingled roof, a Romanesque crypt, and Gothic fresco remains. The surrounding plateau consists of exposed limestone rock, ruins of defensive walls, and a circular defense tower. Its elevated position provides a 360-degree view of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the red-tiled roofs of the medieval town below.
Location & Access Logistics
The landmark is located directly above Glavni trg (Main Square) in central Kamnik. Access is via a paved, steep pedestrian path starting from the square, requiring a 5-minute uphill walk. Parking is available at the Kamnik-mesto train station lot or the nearby Franciscan Square, both within 500 meters. The Kamnik-mesto railway station is a 10-minute walk from the base.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The castle was established in the 11th century as the seat of the powerful Bavarian Counts of Andechs. The double-story chapel was added in the 12th century to serve both the nobility and the commoners. Most of the castle was dismantled in the 16th century following an earthquake and changing military needs, leaving only the chapel and defensive remnants.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore the interior of the Romanesque chapel and its crypt during the summer tourist season or via pre-arranged tours. The rocky plateau serves as a primary photography point for the town and the Grintovec mountain range. Informational panels detail the genealogical history of the Andechs dynasty and the architectural evolution of the site.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no restrooms or water sources on the hill itself; these are located at the base in the town square. The path is lit at night and features several wooden benches. 5G cellular signal is excellent. Due to the steep steps and uneven rock terrain, the site is not wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
The site is best for photography in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the mountains to the north and the chapel facade. It is accessible year-round, though the chapel interior has limited winter hours. Visiting during the "Days of National Costumes" festival in September provides a view of traditional activities staged at the site.
Facts & Legends
The local legend of "Countess Veronika" describes a beautiful but stingy woman who was turned into a half-woman, half-snake creature for refusing to donate money for the church's construction. She is said to guard a hidden treasure in the caverns beneath the castle and appears in the official coat of arms of the town of Kamnik.
