Velika Planina, Kamnik, Slovenia, Europe
Velika Planina is a high-mountain karst plateau and dispersed shepherds' settlement located in the Kamnik-savinja-alps_kamnik" class="underline">Kamnik-Savinja Alps, approximately 10km north of Kamnik. It is characterized by one of the few surviving high-altitude herdsmen's villages in Europe, where traditional alpine dairy farming continues.
Visual Characteristics
The plateau is defined by vast undulating pastures and distinctive oval-shaped wooden huts covered with pine shingle roofs (šindel) that extend nearly to the ground. The landscape features typical karst phenomena, including sinkholes, limestone pavements, and depressions. During late spring, the green slopes are covered in purple crocuses (Crocus vernus).
Location & Access Logistics
Primary access is via an aerial cable car from the Kamniška Bistrica valley, which connects to a two-seater chairlift leading to the plateau's highest point, Gradišče. Alternatively, a gravel road leads from Stahovica via Rakova Ravan, where parking is available for a fee. From the parking lots, the settlement is a 30-to-45-minute hike on relatively flat terrain.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The settlement's architectural style dates back to the Middle Ages, though most current huts were rebuilt after being burned by German forces in 1945. The plateau functions as a seasonal grazing common; herdsmen bring cattle to the pastures every June. Geologically, the area consists of Triassic limestone, which prevents surface water accumulation and creates a dry alpine environment.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the central activity, with trails connecting the three main settlements: Velika, Mala, and Gojška Planina. Visitors can visit the Preskar Museum, a small, original oval hut that showcases pastoral life. During the grazing season (June–September), it is possible to purchase traditional Trnič cheese and fresh sour milk from the shepherds.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The settlement includes several mountain lodges (e.g., Zeleni Rob, Dom na Mali Planini) that provide food and lodging. Public restrooms are located at the upper cable car station and within the lodges. There is no central shaded area on the open pastures. 5G and 4G cellular signals are generally strong across the plateau due to unobstructed lines of sight.
Best Time to Visit
June is the optimal month to witness the arrival of the cattle and the blooming of alpine flowers. For photography, the first or last light of the day highlights the textures of the wooden shingles and the limestone topography. In winter, the plateau serves as a small ski resort and a destination for snowshoeing and sledding.
Facts & Legends
The Trnič cheese produced here is known as the "cheese of love"; traditionally, shepherds would make two identical pear-shaped pieces, keeping one and giving the other to their beloved upon returning to the valley. Another notable feature is the Snow Mary Chapel (Marija Snežna), which was also rebuilt in the original shepherd style after being destroyed in WWII.
