Visual Characteristics
The beach consists of fine, light-colored sand. Lake Michigan's water color varies from deep blue to grey depending on atmospheric conditions and wind. Dune formations, stabilized by vegetation including grasses and shrubs, are present behind the main beach area. The shoreline extends approximately 1.5 kilometers.

Turn north onto Miller Avenue and proceed for approximately 3 kilometers. A dedicated parking lot is available, with capacity for approximately 200 vehicles. Parking fees may apply seasonally. Public transportation is limited; the Gary Public Transit bus route 14 stops at the intersection of Miller Avenue and 15th Avenue, requiring a 1.5 kilometer walk to the beach entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Miller Beach is part of the Indiana Dunes National Park system, formed by glacial activity and subsequent shoreline processes of Lake Michigan. The dunes are a geologically recent formation, dating back to the last glacial period. The area has historically been used for recreation and as a natural buffer zone.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is permitted during daylight hours when lifeguards are on duty (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day). Beachcombing for stones and driftwood is common. Birdwatching is a popular activity, particularly during migration seasons. Hiking trails are accessible from the parking area, leading into the dune ecosystem.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available near the main parking lot. Limited shade structures are present. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are permanently located on-site; visitors should bring their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
For swimming and beach activities, the period from June to August offers the warmest water temperatures. For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal conditions for the dunes and shoreline. High tide can reduce the available sandy area.
